The Irons Oaks Foundation is hosting Ride to Discovery Sept. 24 in south suburban downtown Park Forest. Routes are 10, 25, 50 and 100 miles. Goodie bags are given to the first 1
00 registrants while raffle tickets and T-shirts are available for purchase. All proceeds go toward the purchase of interactive exhibits for Irons Oaks' new Discovery Center. Fee varies dependant on age and form of registration.

Join the Wheeling Wheelmen Sept. 10, 2006, for a non-competitive bike ride through the backroads of southern Wisconsin on the 36th Anniversary Harmon Hundred. The ride starts and ends at Wilmot Union High School, 11112 308th Avenue, Wilmot, Wis.

Sample the good life during Rolling on the River Sept. 2-3 in Yorkville and experience outdoor fun while camping on site near the Fox River. Highlights include cycling events for all skill levels, a post ride celebration, an expo and demonstrations, camping, canoeing, kayaking, and Nordic walking demonstrations.
Proceeds benefit the Illinois Environmental Council Education Fund, Prairie Rivers Network and Illinois Stewardship Alliance 2006.

Around Illinois Back Roads

Beginning Aug. 5, ride Illinois’ low-traffic roads with the Joliet Bicycle Club on the weeklong Around Illinois Back Roads tour.
The mechanic-accompanied ride begins and ends at Morris High School, 1000 Union Street Morris, Ill., traveling through Shabbona and Freeport to Galena and returning via Mt. Carroll and Amboy. Riders camp or stay in motels. Shuttle service and meals are provided.
Register before April 1st and ride the 7-day tour for $250 or the Sampler Weekend tour (Aug. 5-6) for $60. Reduced rates for families and children under 12 are available. Tour limit is 150 riders.

The Chicagoland Bicycle Federation and EarthSave Chicago partner with local vegan-friendly restaurants to organize and promote Veggie Bike and Dine initiatives. Featured in publications such as the Chicago Tribune and Time Out Chicago and in the city of Chicago’s Bike Chicago campaign, Veggie Bike and Dine showcases conscious dining at locally owned restaurants and the diversity of Chicago neighborhoods and the surrounding suburbs.

The event emphasizes the ease of getting around on bicycle, while encouraging people to eat a conscious diet at locally owned restaurants. Veggie Bike and Dine is also part of the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation’s 2006 Top 10 Initiative to expand activities which elevate bicycling within our culture by celebrating bicycling’s vital relationship to food, shopping, entertainment, work, recreation and daily life.

Join the Naperville Bicycle Club 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 16 for a tour of "The Island" of Illinois.
The ride starts at Plano High School, 704 W. Abe St., Plano, Ill. Routes include a 15-mile family ride, and 32-, 62-, and 100-mile courses.
The event has various rest stops. Routes have support and gear. Pre-registration is $15. Day-of registration is $18. Families pay $22.

Watch more than 125 professional and elite amateur cyclists ride 62 miles around a hilly circuit between Longwood Drive and Seeley Avenue (about 50 laps). The race marks the first leg of the 17-day International Cycling Classic Superweek Pro Tour that visits 12 Midwestern cities.
Bike enthusiasts can participate in the Tour de Beverly, a 5-, 10- or 25-mile family ride. Cost is $10. A free Big Wheel race for kids precedes the Classic and an adjacent festival area features live music and refreshment vendors.
