OfficeMax, a leading provider of office products and services, announced today that it is sponsoring what is likely to be crowned the Largest Rubber Band Ball by Guinness World Records at a special ceremony being held in downtown Chicago on Tuesday, November 21.
OfficeMax is transporting the World's Largest Rubber Band Ball in early- November from the Eugene, Oregon garage of creator Steve Milton to downtown Chicago for its official November 21, 11:00 a.m. weigh-in ceremony with Guinness World Records at State Street and Jackson. Experts predict the OfficeMax-sponsored rubber band ball -- created by Milton with help from his 6-year-old son, Bryce -- will break the earlier world record of 3,120 pounds, set by John Bain of Wilmington, Del. The 26-year-old Milton, who started his ball in November 2005 with a number of small OfficeMax rubber bands, says the ball now contains 175,000 individual rubber bands. The rubber ball stands 5 1/2 feet-high and has a circumference of 19 feet.
OfficeMax is sponsoring Milton as he strives to earn the new world's record as part of its kick-off of a nationwide remodel for OfficeMax retail stores starting with 11 Chicago-area locations. The renovated OfficeMax stores feature a new, easy-to-shop layout that offers an in-store cafe with WiFi connectivity, a computerized Ink Refill station, a technology hub where consumers may try out the newest electronic devices, and other shopping amenities.
"OfficeMax is honored to sponsor Steve Milton as he nears his date with fame, November 21, when his rubber band ball is proclaimed by judges from the world-famous Guinness World Records as the Largest Rubber Band Ball," says Ryan Vero, EVP-chief merchandising officer of OfficeMax. Chicagoans are encouraged to attend the Nov. 21 event to have their photos taken with the Largest Rubber Band Ball.
After the November 21 Guinness World Record weighing, the newly-crowned Largest Rubber Band Ball will celebrate its coronation by appearing in the November 23 McDonald's Thanksgiving Day Parade for the first time in its hometown of Chicago. The World's Largest Rubber Band Ball will be exhibited throughout December 2006 and January 2007 at 14 of the new and remodeled OfficeMax stores across Chicago.
OfficeMax is selling 3-inch-diameter Rubber Band Balls in many of its U.S. retail stores. Consumers are being encouraged to buy a package of rubber bands at their local OfficeMax store -- as Steve Milton did -- to begin their own quest to build the next World's Largest Rubber Band Ball. Cleverly costumed canines march the parade route — with Santa in the lead carrying a giant candy cane baton — to celebrate the holiday season.
Reindog festivities include registration from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and judging by celebrities from noon to 1 p.m. The parade steps off at 1:15 p.m., and judges award prizes beginning at 2:15 p.m.
Other activities include a visit and photo opportunity with Santa, and demonstrations by dog experts. The "Pup Tent" features holiday gifts and refreshments for pooches and people.
The Reindog Parade is the holiday season kickoff at the Garden. You may also visit the spectacular Wonderland Express exhibit, although dogs may not join you in the Regenstein Center.
Please note that this is the ONLY day all year that you can bring your dog to the Chicago Botanic Garden.

Young Frankenstein

Dr. Frankenstein's grandson (Gene Wilder) retraces his grandpa's steps to bring to life another monster (Peter Boyle) in this 1974 Mel Brooks film. It's silly and pure in the way that comedy used to be. With memorably eccentric characters--including Teri Garr as a German bombshell and Gene Hackman as a lonely guy who thinks the creature has been sent to him for companionship--it sweetly and hilariously touches on the father-son bond between a mad scientist and his creation.

Love makes people do crazy things, as insurance salesman Walter Neff (Fred MacMurray) learns the hard way when he and expert manipulator Phyllis Dietrichson (Barbara Stan-wyck) plot to kill her husband and collect on his policy in this 1944 noir. It's one of the all-time great stories of a murder plot gone awry, driven by a brilliant script from Billy Wilder and Raymond Chandler--the Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen of screenwriting teams if ever there was one.

Rock Hudson's in a pickle: His best bud's sister (Dorothy Malone) loves him, but he loves his friend's wife (Lauren Bacall). And the alcoholic pal (Robert Stack) isn't pleasing any of them. Wealth, betrayal, sex and booze are recipe for fistfights and fallings out in Douglas Sirk's deliciously over-the-top 1956 melodrama, which drives home the old adage that money can't buy happiness.
